Neurodegenerative Diseases

Neurodegenerative diseases still represent one of the great challenges facing medicine today.

These diseases are characterized by premature neuronal death. Millions of neurons and their synapses, which form the cerebral cortex, gradually cease to function. In practical terms, nerve cells and the connections that allow information to be exchanged between different cortical areas are progressively lost in a slow and gradual process.

For those without a scientific background, it is as if a dense motorway network made up of neurons and junctions — the synapses — were suddenly interrupted.

The consequence is a slow and progressive decline in multiple brain functions. Memory disorders, language difficulties and motor disturbances can become part of a complex range of symptoms. The highest incidence occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. These diseases have a chronic course and affect not only those who live with them, but also the people close to them.

Over the years, the disease makes itself felt through suffering, physical and psychological stress, and financial pressure.

Those who are surrounded by loved ones and who do not risk exhausting their life savings to face a long therapeutic journey may be considered “fortunate”. Now think of those who are alone or who struggle to make ends meet. Think of the long therapeutic journey that can continue for years.

Think about all of this... and then think that together we can help ease this painful burden.

This section will be expanded with detailed information on the different neurodegenerative diseases.
